Every day across Houston, parents drop their children off at HISD schools and bus stops with backpacks full of homework, permission slips, lunches and hope. Hope in a school day full of learning, a school year full of accomplishing goals, and a public school career that will prepare our children for a higher-level education. It is our responsibility as community members and parents to elect leadership that understands the needs of our children. That is why I am proud to announce my campaign for HISD Trustee, District 1. I am an attorney, HISD parent and community member who wants the best for our children.
HISD District 1 deserves effective, responsive, collaborative leadership to navigate the public school landscape and create the best learning environment for all our students. We need a leader who can work effectively with fellow board members and the administration, teachers, and families to bring out the best that our schools have to offer. One who is passionate about connecting with a community, some of whom are difficult to communicate with, and have the knowledge to intervene when our public schools have problems, long before they become front page news. Every year matters to our students. Every year. It is imperative that we be led by someone with a sense of urgency with things that matter, and the ability to demand answers, work with peers and instigate change so that every student gets the education they need, every year. Prepared to change quickly as new issues arise, and become familiar with and change as needed.
My priorities, as HISD Trustee:
- To stop attaching high stakes to standardized tests, and working diligently to mitigate the test prep culture,
- Create and pursue goals that ensure equity in our community, and focus on a well round education and with high achievement, and make sure all of our programs, from magnets to vanguard to special education, meet those goals, and
- Graduate students well prepared for the challenges of college or, if they choose, with a good foundation in a vocational career.
Please join us in making HISD a more responsive system for all. We all have an important part to play in making sure our children get the education they deserve . Be a member of this team.
